Gianluca Iazzolino is professor in Digital Development at the Global Development Institute of the University of Manchester. His research is located at the intersection of migrations and digital technologies. He is particularly interested in the tension between inclusion and surveillance that defines many initiatives where digital platforms and big data are used to address the sustainable development goals agenda. His main geographic focus is on East Africa, where he has explored the dynamics through which power relations are reproduced in the Somali diaspora, the way money and information move between refugee camps and urban spaces in Kenya, Somaliland and Uganda, the implications of the biometric identification systems used by aid agencies, and how digital platforms are attempting to capture the local informal economy. Recently, he has expanded his focus to Southern Europe, where he is delving into the ambiguous role of the digital economy in the socio-economic inclusion of migrants and refugees.
