FIERI was launched with the aim of providing Turin and Piedmont (and the country as a whole),
with a European-level research institute
and cognitive tools suitable for dealing with the migratory phenomenon,
which in those years was making a decisive leap in scale.

FIERI was founded in 2001 as an initiative of Giovanna Zincone, building on her previous experience as President of the Commission for immigrant integration policies as part of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (1998-2001).
Giovanna Zincone left her position as President in 2016, the year in which Elisabetta Galeotti was elected.
In the meantime, the structure of FIERI has become more complex and in 2009 saw the introduction of the role of Director, a position held since 2009 by Ferruccio Pastore.

Since its inception, FIERI has worked to foster dialogue and lcollaboration among the world of social research, organised civil society and the spheres of public administration and political decision-making.

Networks and relationships

Over this long period of time, we have worked to build networks and relationships on two distinct but strongly connected levels.
1) On the one hand, to strengthen cultural and civic roots and commitment in our original territorial context (Turin, Piedmont and the entire North-West).
2) On the other hand, we have never abandoned our strong original international perspective, manifested in both the quality of our scientific production and the quantity and relevance of international research collaborations.

Inclusion and Gender Equality Plan

Alongside the traditional focus on gender equity, FIERI has over time begun to invest in the inclusion of people with a migrant background in the working group, in the belief that diversity should not only be studied but also practised. To this end, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, we have launched programmes such as the MigRicerca research grants and the Sguardi Plurali photographic contest. FIERI was also the first Italian body to integrate its Gender Equality Plan with attention to the origins of its staff members by developing a Gender and Diversity Equality Plan.
