Transnational Politics
21 October 2008

The aim of this project, financed by the Compagnia di San Paolo, was to analyse: a) whether those concerned in the work of investigation engage in transnational political activities, and if so what form these take, at what level of intensity and if they concern mainly the homeland, the local context of residence or both; b) whether the peculiarities of the Italian political system and its organisation and operative approach, encourage or discourage transnational political activity among immigrant groups; c) whether emigration policies and nationality laws, as well as the formal and informal political actors in the immigrants’ countries of origin, influence the transnational political activities of their diaspora, and if so, to what extent and in what direction, and d) whether the presence of transnational political activity fosters or hinders integration – of a political nature in the first place, but not only – of immigrant groups in host societies. The project involved researchers of Romanian and Polish origin and entailed a period of field work in the countries of origin.
